The New South Wales election was very successful for the Lower North Shore Greens. In all 3 of our electorates we managed to beat Labor into second place. In Willoughby there was a 5% swing to us in primary vote terms giving us a total primary vote of 16.44%. In North Shore there was a smaller swing of 2.32% giving us a total primary vote of 20.22%. In Lane Cove there was a swing of 3.17% leading to a primary vote of 17.69%.

The 3 candidates are pleased with their results. The Greens are now the main opposition to the Liberal Party in this area. The Lower North Shore Greens will continue to work hard to show that we are a real alternative for the people of the North Shore. We would like to thank everyone who supported the campaign and all of those voters who trusted us with their vote.

The lower north Shore Greens have pre-selected candidates to run in the 2011 New South Wales State Election.

The Candidate in the Seat of Lane Cove is Keith Mcilroy. Keith is a councillor currently serving on Lane Cove Council. You can find out more information about Keith here. You can also follow his campaign blog and his website
In the Seat of Willoughby the Greens candidate is Robert McDougall. Robert currently works as an advisor to members of the Sydney City Council. More information about Robert can be found here. Robert also has a campaign blog which you can follow and on Facebook .

Say NO to new coal power in NSW

The Keneally Government is moving forward with plans that could see two new coal-fired power stations built in NSW.

New coal power will be an economic and environmental disaster for the state.

These plants if built will undermine the chance of a clean energy future and will miss an opportunity for long term sustainable jobs in renewable energy and energy efficiency industries.

Walk Against Warming – End of year breakfast – 10am Saturday 12 December

The Lower North Shore Greens will be meeting in Bradfield Park at 10am on Saturday the 12th of December for an end of year breakfast. All friends and supporters are welcome to attend. Juice, fruit and muffins will be provided. We’ll be close to local cafes, or feel free to bring your own favourite breakfast treats.

We will then join the Walk organised by North Shore Climate Action starting at midday and arriving at Martin Place for the main walk at 1pm.

Greens celebrate 35.8% two party preferred result in Bradfield

The Bradfield by-election is over and the Greens have something to celebrate. Together we ran an excellent grassroots campaign that became a national media story following the Liberal leadership spill that saw climate denier Tony Abbott become leader. Amid a circus of infighting and disunity on climate change from the Liberals, and with no Labor candidate, the Greens emerged as the credible alternative. The result shows a tremendous acceptance for the Greens in such a Liberal stronghold.

I asked Bradfield to send a message to Canberra on climate change and one in four people responded (see my media release below). Onthe first count there was a 4.7% swing against the Liberal candidate on primary votes. That’s enough of a swing to lose an election. Once postal votes were counted the swing was 3.3%. The final Greens vote was 35.8% two party preferred, a strong result in the Liberal heartland. Despite Labor not standing, the Liberals have achieved their lowest primary vote in Liberal Party history in both Bradfield and Higgins.

It has been my pleasure to represent the Greens and to work with so many wonderful people. Thank you to everyone who supported the Greens campaign, and thanks to the many thousands of people in Bradfield who voted Greens for the first time, whether on principle or in protest. However the Liberals spin the result, we sent a clear message to the people in Bradfield that action on climate change is worth fighting for.

LNSG covers the Local Government Areas of Mosman, North Sydney, Hunters Hill, Lane Cove and Willoughby; The NSW State electorates of North Shore, Lane Cove and Willoughby and the Federal electorate of North Sydney.

LNSG meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.
